At the Edge of the World – Vivian Maier in Saint-Palais-sur-Mer
What do you do when the heat along the French Atlantic coast becomes almost unbearable – unless you’re indoors or in the refreshing water of a pool? Exactly – you go visit a photo exhibition by Vivian Maier in Saint-Palais-sur-Mer.
We visited the exhibition on June 13, 2025, so it’s quite possible that by now a new show has taken over at the Maison des Douanes.
Vivian Maier is now considered one of the most important figures in street photography. Her body of work was only discovered posthumously and later made public – a fascinating story that spans from anonymity to global recognition.
As far as my French allowed, the exhibition also touched on Vivian Maier’s world travels and the photographic impressions she captured along the way.
Why is this exhibition worth visiting even if you’re not particularly into street photography?
While we were staying near La Palmyre, that classic French coastal vibe didn’t quite set in at first. The architecture there was rather plain and functional. Saint-Palais-sur-Mer, on the other hand, was a completely different story: The Maison des Douanes appears to be a former customs villa nestled in a well-to-do residential area. For the first time during our trip, I truly felt that southern French seaside charm – it reminded me of my time in Cannes and on the Côte d’Azur.
In addition to its exhibition spaces, the Maison des Douanes also features a beautifully landscaped, park-like garden. A path along the rugged coastline invites you to take a short walk – with expansive views of the sea and the rocky shore.
The exhibition itself was rather compact, but in my opinion, very thoughtfully curated – not overwhelming, but pleasantly balanced. With an admission fee of just 2 €, there’s really nothing to lose! As far as I could tell, there was no audio guide available in German or English. The photo books in the shop were also only in French – which was a pity, as I would have loved to take one home.
Conclusion:
A cultural highlight and a wonderful little discovery for me – and, to my surprise, also for my oldest daughter.
